- Estimativa do consumo de erva e a influência do milho na produção de leite e da carne por bovinos Friesian explorados na granja universitária (zona da Achada) na ilha Terceira do arquipélago dos AçoresPublication . Amaral, Gourlay YoungAnimal performance was the basis for the calculation of herbage intake in a milking and beef herd, raised at the University Experimental Form. The milking herd consisted of 40 cows with an average bodyweight of 550 kg, that were allowed to strip-grazing 20 ha of artificial pasture sown with L. multiflorum and L. perenne as well Trifolium repens, that received 114 kg N and 45 kg P₂0₅ per ha. The M. E. of the forage grazed was calculated having 9,91 MJ/kg of D.M. During the year, each cow consumed 1,123 kg D. M. of corn, and grazed 2,770 kg D.M.. The calculated daily grass intake was 7,58 kg of D. M.. The utilisation efficiency from grass was 71%. Milk yield was 4,125 kg with a butterfat production of 146,4 kg. Each kg of the concentrate was responsable of the production of 2,30 kg milk. The protein requirements of the animals were covered by the microbial and undegraded dietary protein as calculated from the ARC 1980. The beef herd consisted of 16 young bulls from the milking herd, disposing during 175 days 6,5 ha of the same pastures that received the same fertilization treatment. The average initial bodyweight was 216 ± 55 kg and the final bodyweight 357 ± 99 kg. The mean daily weight gain was 0,80 kg. During the experimental period, the animals output per ha was 348,s kg. The average daily intake of D. M. was 2,5 kg for grass, 2,15 kg for maize and 0,85 kg for hay made from grass. The feed conversion D. M./kg gain was 6,8. The utilisation efficiency from frass was 29%. The protein requirements could be fully covered only by the grass consumption.
