- Viver e Morrer Religiosamente. Ilha de São Miguel, século XVIIIPublication . Costa, Susana Goulart; Costa, Susana Goulart; Instituto Cultural de Ponta DelgadaThis study examines religious life and death on the island of São Miguel in the eighteenth century, exploring the relationship between Catholic doctrine, ecclesiastical authority, social practices and individual and family behaviours. Drawing on a wide range of documentary sources, including wills, parish registers, pastoral visitations and episcopal letters, it analyses the ways in which religious norms were adopted, adapted or resisted by both clergy and laypeople. Particular attention is given to the preparation for a good death, the administration of the last sacraments, funeral practices, intercessory prayers for the dead, confraternities and the provision of spiritual assistance to the dying. The study also explores the social and economic dimensions of death, including inequalities in access to religious services, testamentary provisions, funeral expenditure and arrangements for the salvation of souls. It argues that religious practices cannot be understood solely as the outcome of ecclesiastical imposition, since local traditions, family interests and material circumstances shaped the appropriation of Catholic prescriptions. The eighteenth century emerges as a period of significant transformation, marked by the growing importance of family ties, domestic privacy, individual religious consciousness and attachment to life, alongside the gradual decline of traditional confraternities and established forms of collective religious sociability.
