- Checklist of the fishes collected on the «Santa Maria and Formigas 1990: Scientific Expedition»Publication . Arruda, Luís M.; Azevedo, José M. N.; Heemstra, Phillip C.; Neto, Ana I.The Azores are a group of nine islands stretching eastwards from the Mid-Atlantic ridge, from 36° 55' N and 25° 01' W to 39° 43' N and 31° 07' W. Santa Maria (Sma) is the eastern most island of this archipelago and Formigas (For) is a low jumble of volcanic rock nearby. The ichthyological fauna of these islands is not well known. So, the main purpose of this note is to present a list of the fishes caught on this expedition organized by the Department of Biology of the University or the Azores. Fishes were collected in tidepools mainly with rotenone and (using SCUBA) at depths of about 6, 10, 15 and 25 meters (m) and are deposited in the Museu Bocage, Museu Carlos Machado, J. L. B. Smith Institute, U. S. National Museum or Natural History. The taxonomy or the listed species is given according to Clofnam (HUREAU & MONOD, 1979) and the Clofnam-number is indicated. The records are given in a standard sequence: locality, day, month, depth of water and depth of collection (in meters).
- First record of Thorogobius ephippiatus (Lowe, 1839)(Pisces: Gobiidae) for the AzoresPublication .
- Study of a sample of Dusky Groupers, Epinephelus marginatus (Lowe, 1834), caught in a tide pool at Lajes do Pico, AzoresPublication . Azevedo, José M. N.; Rodrigues, João Bernardo; Mendizabel, Mikel; Arruda, Luís M.A total of 175 juvenile Epinephelus marginatus (LOWE, 1834) (= E. guaza (LINNAEUS, 1758)) were collected in a 828 m2 tide pool at Lajes do Pico, Azores, confirming previous accounts on lhe unusual high density of that grouper in this area. All fishes were immature, with total lengths (TL) ranging from 4 to 36cm. Analysis of the length frequency distribution and scalimetry data suggest that four age classes are present: 0+ (4-7cm TL), 1+ (13-20cm TL). 2+ (18-25 cm TL) and 3+/4+ (one 36cm TL specimen). The length/weight relationship is given (TW=0.01388*TL^3.065) and compared with those from other geographical areas. The stomach contents varied with fish size: smaller groupers contained primarily small crustaceans (amphipods, crabs and isopods) while the larger groupers contained mainly larger crustaceans (shrimps and crabs) and fish. Present results suggest that the lagoon system of Lajes do Pico is a nursery for E. marginatus. Further studies are needed to evaluate the importance of this place to the grouper’s local stock and to provide a basis for its management and protection.
