Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: It is undoubted, that the planet Earth currently faces a huge battle, the struggle for its own existence, at least, an existence as we know today and that so enchants us. Moreover, if nothing is done about how we care for it, inevitably, within a few years, the end result will be that we don't have a planet we can call our home. This results in the need to explore the concept of circular economy, seeking to understand its advantages and disadvantages and, strategically, to design models with a view to creating systems that contribute to sustainable development. At present, the construction sector is responsible for a high consumption of resources and energy and also for a high production of waste, and it is imperative to implement the circular economy model, converging to improve sustainability in this sector of activity. In the specific case of the Azores, given its small territorial dimension and due to its insularity and isolation, where there is evidence of a greater scarcity of resources and energy dependence, it makes even more sense to adopt the circular economy model in the construction sector, thus stimulating the presence of the circularity of waste, contributing, on the one hand, to improve environmental sustainability, and on the other hand, to generate economic and social advantages. In this sense, the theme to be explored in the dissertation will be the concept of circular economy, and the methodology to be used will have its theoretical support in the careful and exhaustive collection of elements that allow the establishment of models, principles, objectives and advantages and disadvantages, in view of its applicability in the construction sector of the Autonomous Region of the Azores.
