Abstract(s)
O estudo do investimento público na ilha de São Miguel (Açores), no último quartel do século XIX (1875-1900), é um contributo para analise e integração do caso insular no âmbito da política de melhoramentos materiais que caracterizou a governação portuguesa na segunda metade de oitocentos. Aliás, por toda a Europa prevalecia a apologia do progresso técnico propiciado pela industrialização, pelo crescimento urbano e afirmação da classe média. Assim, sem descurar o contexto europeu e nacional, bem como os paralelismos e as diferenças entre os arquipélagos atlânticos (Madeira e Açores), através da análise de diferente documentação, é explicado os investimentos realizados em S. Miguel, bem como a relevância do contributo ou intervenção estrangeira — em especial, britânica — e todo o impacto, destas infraestruturas, a nível socioeconómico e político. Por último, os projetos não concretizados e os anseios insulares não atendidos também são analisados, com vista a uma melhor compreensão das razões de alguns insucessos.
ABSTRACT: The study of public investment on the island of São Miguel (Azores), in the last quarter of the nineteenth century (1875 to 1900), intended as a contribution to analysis and integration of the insular case under the material improvement policy that characterized the Portuguese rule in the second half of eight. In fact, across Europe prevailed condoning technical progress brought about by industrialization, by urban growth and affirmation of the middle class. So without neglecting the European and national level as well as the parallels and differences between the Atlantic archipelagos (Madeira and Azores), look shall be, through the analysis of different documents, explaining the investments in S. Miguel, as well as the relevance of the contribution or foreign intervention - particularly British - and the entire impact of these infrastructures, socio-economic and political level. Finally, the projects do not materialize and the islanders also wishes not met examined will be with a view to a better understanding of the reasons of some failures.
