Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: The analysis of the minutes concerning the General Board of the District Angra do HeroĆsmo, from 1926 to 1933, allows us to understand the general functioning of public services in the city and its district. Over the seven years, and through the sources mentioned, it is possible to identify the evolution of the legislation, its implementation and the investments made in the islands, including, in addition to Terceira, Graciosa and SĆ£o Jorge. Therefore, the study of the General Board's background helps to know the services that were within the scope of this body (agricultural and livestock services, public works, bureaucratic services, treasury and secretariat, industrial and electrical, road and laboratory services), as well as how they were implemented and their full scope. As it turns out, the Juntas Gerais played a key role in the Azores, as all the development policies of their respective districts were part of their remit, so any change to their by-laws and budgets had a significant socio-economic impact. This dissertation is intended to contribute to the study of the Angra do HeroĆsmo District General Board and its interventions, during a period of profound political changes that had repercussions in all areas of national and island life. It is also intended to understand what changed or persisted with regard to the General Board in the final phase of the First Republic in the period known as the Military Dictatorship (until the entry into force of the 1933 Constitution that institutionalized the Estado Novo).
