O impacto económico do Aeroporto na Ilha de Santa Maria

O aeroporto é, desde há muitos anos considerado conjuntamente com o Centro de Controlo Oceânico, uma infraestrutura de referência na ilha de Santa Maria. Apesar disso o seu impacto no crescimento económico e no emprego da ilha não foi quantificado. Este estudo tem como objetivo principal contribuir para suprimir esta lacuna. Os resultados, obtidos a partir de uma análise de regressão, apontam para um impacto positivo da infraestrutura no Produto Interno Bruto e no emprego (privado) da ilha de Santa Maria. Algumas restrições ao nível dos dados, como a pequena dimensão das séries cronológicas ou a inexistência de outras, como por exemplo, o emprego total da ilha, onde se inclui o emprego público, impuseram, entretanto, algumas limitações ao estudo, o qual beneficiaria, se replicado no futuro, da existência de tais elementos estatísticos.
ABSTRACT: The airport has, for many years been considered together with the Oceanic Control Center, a reference infrastructure on the island of Santa Maria. Despite this, its impact on the island's economic growth and employment has not been quantified. This study aimed at filling this gap. The results, obtained from a regression analysis, suggest a positive impact of that infrastructure on the Gross Domestic Product and on the (private) employment of the island. Some restrictions regarding the data, as the small size of the time series used or the lack of others, such as, for example, the total employment of the island, which includes public employment, have, however, imposed some limitations on the study, which would benefit, if replicated in the future, from the existence of such statistical elements.
