Este trabalho analisa a relação entre o turismo e a produção de resíduos sólidos urbanos para a ilha de São Miguel, através do estudo da cointegração entre séries sazonais. Para o efeito, recorreu-se aos indicadores de turismo (número de hóspedes e dormidas) obtidos no portal do SREA e aos indicadores de produção de resíduos sólidos urbanos, caracterizados em resíduos sólidos urbanos indiferenciados, resíduos de vidro e resíduos de papel e plástico, cujos dados foram cedidos pela entidade gestora de resíduos na ilha de São Miguel, a Musami. Os resultados revelam que existe uma relação entre o turismo e a produção de resíduos sólidos urbanos, mas apenas no período que corresponde ao terceiro trimestre e que essa relação se verifica somente para os resíduos sólidos urbanos indiferenciados e para os resíduos de vidro. Conclui-se, portanto, que o turismo na ilha de São Miguel tem impacto na produção de alguns resíduos sólidos urbanos, na sua época alta, que corresponde aos meses de julho, agosto e setembro.
ABSTRACT: This work analyzes the relationship between tourism and the production of urban solid waste for the island of São Miguel, through the study of cointegration between seasonal series. For this purpose, tourism indicators (number of guests and overnight stays) were used, obtained on the SREA portal, and municipal solid waste production indicators, characterized as unsorted municipal solid waste, glass waste and paper and plastic waste, whose data was provided by the waste management entity on the island of São Miguel, Musami. The results reveal that there is a relationship between tourism and the production of urban solid waste, but only in the period corresponding to the third quarter and that this relationship is verified only for unsorted municipal solid waste and for glass waste. Therefore, it is concluded that tourism on the island of São Miguel has an impact on the production of some urban solid waste, in its high season, which corresponds to the months of July, August and September.
