Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: At the medium altitude of Terceira Island (Azores) there are two main types of pastures, seeded pastures of Lolium perenne L. and Trifolium repens L. and permanent pastures composed mainly with secondary grass species, dominated by Poa trivialis L. or Holcus lanatus L. It is important to know, for each one of these pastures, the seasonal pattern of dry matter production and the quality of the herbage obtained when they are submitted to different managements. The experiments described on this thesis are an attempt to contribute to this knowledge. On a first period (1987 to 1989) it was studied the productivity of a pasture of L. perenne and T. repens (LP) and that of a permanent pasture (ESP) composed mainly by P. trivialis, on a simulated system of intensive production. For this purpose four experiments were installed simultaneously in the two pastures. One experiment was designed to investigate the seasonal pattern of dry matter production in an intensive production system. […]. On the third chapter we describe a trial conducted during three years, from October of 1993 to October of 1996. This trial was installed simultaneously, in a randomized complete block design with three blocks, in a pasture seeded with Lolium perenne and Trifolium repens and in a pasture where, after a culture of hybrid maize for silage, only Trifolium repens was seeded and during one year the spontaneous species were allowed to grow. […].
