Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: The Fourth Industrial Revolution has driven the digitalization and automation of production systems, transforming all sectors of activity across the board. This transformation, known as Industry 4.0, has been promoted in Europe and Portugal through strategies that articulate technological innovation and sustainability, while acknowledging territorial and sectoral inequalities in its implementation. In this context, digital transformation emerges as a strategic opportunity for the Agriculture, Agribusiness, and Sea and Blue Growth sectors in the Autonomous Region of the Azores, identified as priorities in the RIS3-Azores. This dissertation analyzes the state of development of Industry 4.0 in the Azores, in these sectors, through a mixed-methods approach that integrates questionnaire surveys, interviews, and reference to ongoing pilot initiatives. The results confirm the central role of awareness and perception of digital transformation as an explanatory variable for digital maturity. It is concluded that the strategic perception of digital transformation is a driving factor for organizational development. Leadership is also found to be decisive in the integration of sustainability and social responsibility practices, reinforcing their central role in digital awareness, aimed at organizational mobilization for innovation and sustainability. However, structural constraints persist, such as the shortage of qualified human resources, difficulties in accessing financing, and limitations in strategic planning, especially in microenterprises and primary sectors. Digital transformation trajectories are shown to be heterogeneous, shaped by the size, sector, and operational time of organizations. Collaborative initiatives and the strengthening of public policies constitute strategic vectors to accelerate digital maturity and promote the integration of sustainable practices, emphasizing the importance of adopting flexible approaches adapted to the specificities and dynamics of the regional context. It is concluded that Industry 4.0 in the region presents a promising path, particularly if supported by qualified leadership, adequate digital infrastructures, and entrepreneurial public policies, oriented towards a sustainable digital transition and aligned with emerging principles of innovation, sustainability, and technological integration.
