  • Educação ambiental e outros modos de vida
Publication .
  • Teachers’ Motivation for Teaching in Higher Education : Portuguese Validation of a Questionnaire
Publication . Almeida, Leandro S.; Moreira, Maria Alfredo; Caldeira, Suzana Nunes; Soares, Sara Medeiros; Hattum-Janssen, Natascha van; Visser-Wihnveen, Gerda
ABSTRACT: Motivation for teaching is key in the establishment and further development of high-quality higher education, as it affects teachers’ investment in quality learning experiences for their students, as well as institutional efficacy and well-being. This study aimed to validate a questionnaire, originally developed in Belgium, designed to evaluate three dimensions (self-efficacy, interest, and effort) of intrinsic motivation for teaching for a different national population. The sample consisted of 616 academics working in public higher education institutions in Portugal. Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted and internal consistency of items analyzed. The results show that the original dimensionality of the construct is confirmed in the Portuguese teachers’ sample. Motivation for teaching in the Portuguese context is primarily explained by the following factors: personal efficacy, interest in the task, and effort placed on teaching responsibilities. A difference was found in that personal efficacy could not be divided in context and general personal efficacy.
  • Entrada no ensino superior e envolvimento do estudante
Publication . Caldeira, Suzana Nunes; Sousa, Áurea; Mendes, Maria; Silva, Osvaldo Dias Lopes da; Martins, Maria José D.
No Ensino Superior, algumas experiências iniciais podem dificultar o envolvimento no novo ambiente académico.
  • Biting myself so I don’t bite the dust : prevalence and predictors of deliberate self-harm and suicide ideation in Azorean youths
Publication . Carvalho, Célia; Motta, Carolina; Sousa, Marina; Cabral, Joana Moura
To characterize non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) behaviors, methods, and functions as well as suicide ideation in the adolescent population of a Portuguese community in São Miguel Island, Azores. Increasing rates of NSSI behaviors among adolescents have been observed globally, while suicidal behavior has been pointed as a major cause of death during adolescence. A sample of 1,763 adolescents, aged 14 to 22, was randomly drawn from public and private schools and administered a set of self-report questionnaires. Descriptive and regression analyses were used to look for specific relationships and predictors of NSSI and suicide ideation in this isolated community. Approximately 30% of youths reported at least one NSSI behavior, a rate that is twice as high as most studies carried out in mainland Portugal and in other European countries. Biting oneself was the most frequent form of NSSI, and NSSI behaviors served predominantly automatic reinforcement purposes (i.e., regulation of disruptive emotional states). NSSI and suicide ideation encompassed different distal and proximal risk factors. Exploring and characterizing these phenomena is necessary to provide a better understanding, enhance current conceptualizations, and guide the development of more effective prevention and intervention strategies in youths.
  • O Grilo Interior no Ensino Superior : auto-criticismo e auto-compaixão em alunos universitários
Publication .
  • Development and psychometric properties of the community integration scale of adults with psychiatric disorders
Publication . Cabral, Joana Moura; Carvalho, Célia; Motta, Carolina; Silva, Osvaldo
The goal of the current study was to develop and validate the Community Integration Scale for adults with Psychiatric Problems (CISAPP), based on a multidimensional model of community integration. The three-dimensional structure (including physical, psychological, and social dimensions) and validity of CIS-APP was studied in a sample of 183 psychiatric patients from the Azores Islands-Portugal. Confirmatory Factor Analysis has led to the choice of a two-factor with a second order factor solution. Results showed that the CIS-APP is a measure with good psychometric properties, with very good internal consistency and alidity, and with relevant applicability in both clinical and research settings. Furthermore, the current outcomes have brought relevant information concerning the refinement of the theoretical community integration model that underlies the scale’s development.
  • Dealing with Hazing : are there different profiles of higher education students?
Publication . Silva, Osvaldo; Caldeira, Suzana Nunes; Mendes, Maria; Botelho, Susana P.; Martins, Maria J.
This study aims to understand the kind of relationship that students from two Portuguese higher education institutions – the Portalegre School of Health Sciences (ESSP) and the University of the Azores (UAC) – have with hazing and whether there are profiles of students associated with different types of relationship with hazing. Data were collected through the scale ‘Evaluation of Bullying Situations in Higher Education Hazing’. The findings obtained using appropriate statistical techniques, exhibit significant differences between the ESSP and the UAC, with students from the ESSP displaying a better relationship with hazing. They also showcase appreciable differences in the relationship with hazing between the ESSP and the UAC depending on personal, academic and behavioral variables. The findings finally indicate that, at each institution, the profile of students who express a better relationship with hazing differs from those who distance themselves from this ritual in terms of personal, academic and behavioral variables.
  • University Student's perceptions of hazing : a gender approach
Publication . Caldeira, Suzana Nunes; Silva, Osvaldo; Mendes, Maria; Botelho, Susana P.; Martins, Maria J.
The initiation rituals that freshmen are subjected to in universities have been characterized quite differently, although the most frequent view is that it is a rough experience for those coming to higher education for the first time. Gender has emerged as a differentiating variable of how students experience this practice. In this study, our interest is to find out the perceptions of university students over the events that take place during the entry to higher education through a comparative gender analysis. The sample included247 students of both genders. Data were collected by means of the scale 'Evaluation of Bullying Situations in Higher Education Hazing', which consists of 15 items and three factors: 'positive relationship with hazing', ‘negative relationship with hazing’ and ‘social dimension’. Findings indicate that, in the overall scale, there are significant differences between genders, with boys expressing a stronger agreement with the practice. In the analysis by dimension, this fact is reinforced, since in the 'positive relationship with hazing', boys exhibit significantly higher results than girls. In the distribution of variables in the two-dimensional space (CatPCA), we witness that, despite agreeing with hazing practices, boys display a very heterogeneous behavior, while girls more homogeneously disagree with them.
  • Characterization and Predictors of Paranoid Ideation in Youths
Publication . Sousa, Marina; Carvalho, Célia; da Motta, Carolina; Cabral, Joana Moura; Pereira, Vera Lúcia do Couto; Caldeira, Suzana Nunes; Peixoto, Ermelindo Bernardo
Paranoid ideation is a common thought process that constitutes a defense against perceived social threats. The current study aimed at the characterization of paranoid ideation in youths and to explore the possible predictors involved in the development of paranoid ideations. Paranoid ideation, shame, submission, early childhood memories and current depressive, anxious and stress symptomatology were assessed in a sample of 1516 Portuguese youths. Higher frequencies of paranoid ideation were observed, particularly in females and youths from lower socioeconomic status. The main predictors identified relates to submissive behaviors and adverse childhood experiences, and especially to shame feelings. The current study emphasizes that the predictors are similar to findings in adults and clinical populations, and future implications to research and clinical practice aiming at paranoid ideations are discussed, as well as the pertinence of the study of mediating factors that allow a wider understanding of this thought process in younger populations and the prevention of psychopathology in adulthood.
