Abstract:	The main goal of this thesis is to improve the overall understanding of explosive volcanic eruptions, in particular of those that occur in the Azores and produce PDCs. To achieve this goal, two contrasting types of PDC-forming episodes from central volcanoes of the islands of Terceira and Faial were studied in detail. These studies allow a comprehensive understanding of the wide range of eruptive styles that produce PDCs and how the dynamics of these currents varies through time and space.
