Une attention toute spéciale a été accordée aux régions insulaires, qui sont traitées à part de l'ensemble continental, en des analyses détaillées ile par ile. L’objet de l'étude n'était pas seulement la tendance populationnelle au cour de la période couverte par les divers recensements (1864-1981), mais surtout les structures démographiques par âge et par sexe. L’étude de ces variables nous a permis d'évoluer le vieillissement de la population des iles des Açores et de Madère, ainsi que le déséquilibre entre les sexes. Le premier point est un thème particulièrement brillant de la problématique populationnelle, tout particulièrement en Europe, tandis que le second est caractéristique des pays ou des zones de force émigration, ce qui est le cas du Portugal, continental ou insulaire.ABSTRACT: This article is the result of a presentation to the seminar «Census 91», intended to delineate, through the study of the census, a broad overview of the evolution of the Portuguese population. Special attention was given to the island regions, which are dealt with separately from the mainland, in a individualized analysis, by island. At issue were, not only the main trends of the population during the census period -1864-1981-, but also, preponderantly, the demographic structures, by age and sex. The study of these variables allowed us to evaluate the aging of the island populations of the Azores and Madeira and the disajustments between the sexes.
