Para atingir o objetivo proposto, foi realizada uma pesquisa bibliográfica sobre as perceções dos residentes, os impactos do turismo na comunidade local, os impactos do turismo em ilhas, os modelos de avaliação das atitudes e perceções dos residentes e os fatores que influenciam as perceções dos residentes face ao desenvolvimento do turismo, tendo em conta os princípios de desenvolvimento turístico sustentável. Pretende-se determinar se as caraterísticas sociodemográficas dos residentes e o grau de envolvimento no sector influenciam as suas opiniões e perceções e se é possível identificar grupos homogéneos de residentes com base nas suas perceções de impactos do turismo. A metodologia de investigação assenta na recolha de dados através de um inquérito por questionário aos residentes da ilha de São Miguel. A identificação de clusters de residentes e o conhecimento do seu perfil será útil para o planeamento e gestão do destino, contribuindo para uma melhor compreensão da estrutura das reações da comunidade local em relação à atividade turística.ABSTRACT: This research aims to assess the perception of the impacts of tourism on the local community by the residents of São Miguel island, resulting from airspace liberalization and from the beginning of the operation of low-cost air companies in 2015. It also aims to identify the factors that may influence the opinions of residents regarding the development of tourism. To achieve this purpose, a bibliographic research was made about the perceptions of residents, tourism impacts on local communities and small islands, the valuation models of the attitudes and perceptions of residents and the factors that influence attitudes and perceptions of residents regarding the development of tourism, taking account of the sustainable tourism development principles. It is intended to determine whether the sociodemographic characteristics of the residents and the professional involvement in the sector influences their opinions and perceptions and whether it is possible to identify homogeneous groups of residents based on their perceptions of tourism impacts.
