A partir de 1941, o arquipélago é alvo da maior movimentação de tropas portuguesas durante o conflito. O aumento do dispositivo militar em conjugação com a limitação dos recursos locais de hospitalização e a precária situação sanitária, obrigam o Comando Militar dos Açores a considerar o levantamento de novas formações hospitalares nas ilhas militarmente ocupadas: São Miguel, Terceira e Faial. Montados a partir da adaptação de edifícios existentes ou construídos de raiz, estes hospitais chegam aos nossos dias em estados muito diferenciados de conservação e sob tutelas muito diversificadas. Progressivamente apagadas da memória pela inexorável força do tempo, procuramos dar a conhecer estas estruturas através da sua identificação, inventariação e a forma como funcionaram durante o conflito, relevando o seu significado histórico e patrimonial.ABSTRACT: This master's thesis aims to study the Military Hospital Heritage of the Azores during World War II. From 1941 onwards, the archipelago was the target of the largest movement of Portuguese troops during the conflict. The increase in military personnel in conjunction with the limitation of local hospitalization resources and the precarious health situation, forces the Military Command to consider the creation of new hospital formations on the militarily occupied islands: São Miguel, Terceira, and Faial. Assembled from the adaptation of existing buildings or built from scratch, these hospitals reach our days in very different states of conservation and under very diverse guardianships.
